    General
  1. What is CerQana?

CerQana is a helping and locating system designed to improve autonomy of people with disabilities, while providing relief to their relatives and easing the job of the professionals that take care of them.

  2. What do I need to start using CerQana?

    • A Smartphone with Android 3.0 or superior for the user's app
    • Internet access in the user's app, 3G or similar
    • Access to a web browser (Google Chrome recommended) from where see user's location and configure the system
    • An activated user account. You can register here. Once the account has been activated, you will be able to access to the gestion panel and you may install both apps, which you can download from Google Play
    • Optional: other Smartphone Android 2.2 or superior for the relative's app, where you will receive real time notifications
  3. Where can I use CerQana?

CerQana doesn't have any kind of geographical limitation, so you can use it anywhere, as long as you fulfil the basic requisites.

  4. Does monitoring the user's location have any legal implication?

According the European Commission is lawful using geolocation to monitor a person's location as long as it is justified to fulfil the global objective of the service. Regarding CerQana, being the user's location tracking a neccessity to fulfil the ultimate goal of safety, using geolocation is right and lawful.

However, they do recommend to inform the user about his location been monitored, as long as that was possible; and he must be allowed to give his opinion about whether using or not the service.

More information about this can be found here.

  5. Can I install CerQana in more than a Smartphone at the same time?

No, you can, for safety and synchronization reasons: if two different devices were working with the same account in different locations, the system wouldn't know which one is correct. Once CerQana is installed in a Smartphone and you log in, it is linked to the device. In order to use CerQana with the same account in other Smartphone, you must first unlink it.

  6. Using CerQana will speed up the battery consumption?

Like any other application working in the background, CerQana will speed up battery's consumption. Using the GPS will also speed up its consumption. However, thanks to the battery saving system implemented, this consumption is only incremented in a very tiny amount.

It is recommended, nevertheless, charging the Smartphone every night. Also, remember that CerQana will notify both the user and the relative when the battery level falls bellow 20%.

  7. Could the Smartphone lose coverage and stop tracking user's location?

Since CerQana uses the network to send locations, if covarage is lost at some point, locations won't be sent. So, during the time there is no coverage, you won't see current user's location in the website, you will see the last known location. If this would happen, all locations not sent will be stored in the Smartphone and will be sent as soon as the coverage is restored.

If this happens, remember that from the relative's app you can check the user's location when he hasn't access to Internet. A SMS will be automatically sent to the user's CerQana app, and it will also automatically answer with the user's location in another SMS. Remember that this two SMS will be charged by your telephone service provider, one to you and one to the user.

  8. Do I need to root my device?

No. CerQana doesn't need to root your Smartphone, nor modify your ROM and it's not going to make any enduring change in your device. Also, your warranty is not going to be compromised.

    7. Enter your user data (remember that each user has his own username and pass, which are different to the ones of the control account).

Press “Allow” so it can work properly (remember that you can avoid notification from appearing in the user’ smartphone from the configuration menu in CerQana’s website).

      Allow notifications

  11. How do I uninstall CerQana?

To correctly uninstall the system, you need to unlink the account first. After that, you may normally uninstall the app from the settings menu of the Smartphone.

If you try to uninstall CerQana without unlinking it first, you won't be able to, as it is a "device administrator". This way, safety is improved against mistake uninstalls. Enter in Settings -> Safety -> Device administrators. You must uncheck CerQana and confirm you want to deactivate it. After that, enter in Settings -> Applications and uninstall the app in a normal way.

Ajustes / Seguridad / Administradores de dispositivos
  12. How do I unlink CerQana from a smartphone?

Log in in the website with your control user data. Once logged, in the left toolbar you must press "Unlink CerQana" in the SENSORS panel and confirm that you want to unlink. A signal will be sent to the user's app closing it, unlinking it, and deleting all stored data.

  13. What is a device administrator, and why does CerQana needs that permission?

Android 2.2 introduced device admin API. It is designed to business apps that requires a higher lever of security. It allows to remotely control some features of the device. Before a device admin app can be used in a Smartphone, it must show a list of what permissions that app is going to have, and the user must accept them. CerQana request device admin permission only to prevent the user uninstall it by mistake. After been activated, the app can't be uninstall regularly, revoking that permission is needed prior uninstalling it.

So, when you install the app you will be asked to activate this permission. You will se an empty list of aditional features, because CerQana won't use any other feature. The only difference with a regular app is not been able to uninstall it regularly. You can revoke the permission anytime, although it is strongly recommended not to do so, because CerQana may not work properly. When you want to quit using CerQana, unlink the app. Doing this will automatically revoke the permission.

  14. Advices
  15. What web browser should I use?

The website is ready to work at any browser, whether from a desktop computer, a Smartphone or a tablet. However, we strongly recommend Google Chrome due of its fluidity and been more resistent against unexpected errors.

  16. How can I save battery?

    • When the user is inside a location marked as "Home", CerQana starts working in battery save mode. Locations are registered in a incremental time interval, so the more he stays in a Home, the bigger is the interval, and therefore, the lower its battery consumption. When CerQana detects the user has left the Home, it returns to its normal mode. This way, the user can set the safety locations where the user will spend most of the time (home, school, day center, etc) to save battery.
    • Another way to save battery is to disable the fall sensor. In some cases, this functionality isn't useful and can be safely disabled.
  17. What apps should I disable from the user's smartphone?

You can disable or enable the Smartphone's apps from the CONFIGURATION panel in the website. You can do this any times you want. A disabled app won't be uninstalled, but it won't be accesible from the app's menu of the Smartphone. If there is any app enabled, this menu will disappear.

Certain applications use to be installed by the manufacturer of the Smartphone and we recommend to disable for not been useful at all:

    • Settings: allows the user to modify some of the Smartphone's features. Once the Smartphone is configured, there is no need of it.
    • Google Settings: configures some parameters related to the Google accounts used by the Smartphone. Not useful at all.
    • Play Store: Google's app store. You can disable it if you don't want the user to install apps without your knowing (remember that if you want to install a new app, you can enable Google Play and later disable it again)
  18. Problem solving
  19. I'm pressing "Home", but CerQana doesn't appear

CerQana is a launcher, an app that modifies and personalizes the Smartphone's operative system. It is possible to have several launchers installed, but only one can be active. In a question bellow it is explained how to set CerQana as the preferred launcher, but it is possible that the Smartphone already had a different launcher preferred.

In that case, you must restore app settings in order to set CerQana as the preferred. Go to Settings -> Applications and pres the contextual menu button. Press now the "Restore application preferences" item. Now, when pressing "Home" CerQana can be setted as preferred.

  20. I have an unsynchronized element between the app and the website

If for some reason some data sent to the app about any item would be lost, the system will be automatically aware and would try to resinchronize it every 4 hours. However, you can manually force a synchronization by pressing the "Sync data" button from the CONFIGURATION panel. This will force to re-send all the data stored in the server to the app.
